Breathlessness can be extremely unpleasant and difficult to treatFor many people, symptoms persist despite medication, affecting daily life and wellbeing.

We investigate how the brain generates the feeling of being breathless, and how it is affected by stress, mood and previous experience. To do this, we combine functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain with detailed physiological and psychological measures, as well as immersive virtual reality approaches that allow us to study and safely modify breathing-related experience.

We aim to use our findings to discover, design and test new personalised treatments for breathlessness.

BREATHLESSNESS IN A VIRTUAL WORLD Study

We want to understand how perception impacts breathlessness and physical performance.

We are seeking healthy volunteers for a virtual reality exercise study.

PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT

We're making the road to recovery more fun with virtual reality!

We are seeking people who have a heart or lung condition to share their feedback on a virtual reality-based application, which is being developed to support recovery.
