OxCIN Ethics Procedure
A new system for submitting applications to CUREC is live from 5th August 2025. Please follow the guidance below, but use the new system to submit. Some introductory guidance on how to use the new system is here.
APPLICATION RESOURCES
Please see the University Research Ethics section of the Research Governance OxIntranet for more information on the university research ethics (CUREC) application process, including information on best practice guidance, Approved Procedures, and template documents for research involving MRI, MEG, and NIBS.
Please use the templates from the Approved Procedures and generic template sections of the webpage, rather than re-using documents from a previous study, to ensure that you are using the most recent version.
If your application requires a risk assessment, please see here for examples. Note that a risk assessment is usually not required if you are using an Approved Procedure with a healthy population.
If you wish to pay your participants for their time and/or reimburse travel expenses, you will need to specify this in your application. Information about how to arrange payments for participants is here, including example amounts. Note that these ranges are not mandatory or pre-approved, but merely guidelines based on common practice. An appropriate level of payment should be determined and reviewed by CUREC for each individual study.
Applications are now created and submitted on the online ethics application system called Worktribe. The system can be accessed here and user guides are available here.
In addition to the application itself, all participant documents will need to be uploaded on Worktribe (including Information Sheet, consent, adverts, debrief, questionnaires etc.). All applications for MRI, MEG, and NIBS will also require submission of the MS-IDREC Admin Review Checklist
OxCIN INTERNAL PRE-REVIEW PROCESS
MRI
CUREC applications involving MRI require review by a departmental (OxCIN) reviewer prior to submission to MS-IDREC via Worktribe for final ethical approval. Please add nancy.rawlings@ndcn.ox.ac.uk and iske.bakker@ndcn.ox.ac.uk to your Worktribe applications and email admin@oxcin.ox.ac.uk when you are ready for your review to take place.
Please email admin@oxcin.ox.ac.uk if you have any queries while you are working on your application.
MEG
CUREC applications involving MEG require review by a departmental reviewer prior to submission to MS-IDREC via Worktribe for final ethical approval. Please add sven.braeutigam@psych.ox.ac.uk for MEG review and rob.seymour@psych.ox.ac.uk for MEG-OPM review and email them when you are ready for your MEG review to take place. If your study also involves MRI (including a structural scan only), please add Nancy Rawlings and Iske Bakker to your application on Worktribe and copy in admin@oxcin.ox.ac.uk to notify us of your request for review.
NIBS
CUREC applications involving NIBS require review by a departmental reviewer prior to submission to MS-IDREC for final ethical approval. Please complete the OxCIN NIBS Internal Review Pre-CUREC Submission Form and contact admin@oxcin.ox.ac.uk when you are ready for your NIBS review to take place. We will arrange for the NIBS team to review your application.

Department Review and Sign-off
Following your internal OxCIN review, you will be able to request departmental sign-off on your application from your HoD office. Please note that NDCN also requires a department review, please add Alexandra Almeida to your Worktribe application and email her once you are ready for your department review. Once your department review is complete (NDCN only) and you have HoD sign-off you will be able to submit your application using the Worktribe system for final ethical approval.
