Study with us
DPhils at WIN are usually full time 3-4 year research degree courses. Students are registered as students within one of the main departments associated with WIN: Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Department of Experimental Psychology, or Department of Psychiatry.
Independent research is carried out under the supervision and guidance of principal investigators and researchers within the students' chosen research group or lab. Supervision and guidance may also include co-supervision from other collaborating groups or labs, from within their main department or from other departments within the University or from another institution. Students are actively involved in a variety of programmes and seminars within WIN, their department, and more broadly with other University departments.
FUNDING
Departments are not able to provide funding for all candidates who are successful in obtaining a place on a DPhil course. However, candidates whose applications are ranked most highly may be eligible to be put forward to funding competitions run within the University, that allocate Research Councils funds (e.g. MRC, ESRC) on a competitive basis. Successful applicants are also welcome to seek their own funding from other sources, e.g. charitable bodies or international scholarships.
POTENTIAL PROJECTS
The majority of applicants to DPhils across our departments apply to work with a specific Principal Investigator (PI) on a predefined project. Typically, these projects are not advertised and prospective students should make direct enquires with the PI on whose area of research they are interested to see if they will be offering projects or accepting students. Most departments require that these discussions take place in advance of submitting any application and supervisory support must be received prior to applying. A list of WIN supervisors is below.
