We are happy to announce a recent publication in Nature Neuroscience highlighting the dorsal posterior insula as an index of the core 'it hurts' experience of pain. Irene Tracey, Andrew Segerdahl, and colleagues applied a combination of heat stimuli (including capsaicin - the active ingredient in chillies) to the legs of healthy volunteers. Using a technique called arterial spin labeling to track brain activity over an extended period of stimulation, neural underpinnings associated with momentary experiences, such as attention to fear, were filtered from those underpinning the actual experience of pain. Activity changes in the dorsal posterior insula tracked changes in the volunteers' ratings of pain. This finding opens up exciting avenues of research into how modulating activity in the dorsal posterior insula might help to treat pain and also index pain in individuals who lack the ability to communicate.
