Breathlessness can be extremely unpleasant and difficult to treat. For many people, despite medication, breathlessness remains a problem.
We investigate how the brain generates the feeling of being breathless, and how it is affected by stress, mood and previous experience. To do this we use functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, in combination with detailed measures of physiology and psychology.
We will use our findings to discover, design and test new personalised treatments for breathlessness.
