Daniel Reznik leads the Anatomical Basis of Cognition (ABC) lab at the University of Oxford and the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience (NTNU). 


His research focuses on the functional neuroanatomy, development, and evolution of distributed cortical and subcortical circuits supporting cognition, with a particular interest in the hippocampal system. Working across Oxford and the Kavli Institute, his lab combines human 7-Tesla fMRI, comparative neuroanatomy, and computational modeling to study the fine-grained anatomy and function of human and animal brains at the individual-subject level across different timescales. He uses these methods to understand how human hippocampus-dependent cognition emerges over development, how it evolved across species, and how it breaks down in neurodegenerative diseases.

Short bio

Daniel did his PhD in the Motor Cognition Laboratory under the supervision of Roy Mukamel at Tel Aviv University, where he used fMRI, EEG, MEG, and single-unit recordings from patients with epilepsy to study the effects of self-generated motor activity on auditory perception. This broad experience with human neuroimaging methods made him realize their strengths, but, more importantly, their limitations. Therefore, for his postdoctoral training, Daniel switched gears and sought biologically grounded approaches to human cognitive neuroscience. He joined Randy Buckner's lab at Harvard University where he was trained in precision neuroimaging, functional connectivity, comparative hippocampal neuroanatomy, and computational modelling (through a collaboration with Sam Gershman). This is when Daniel took his first steps into the challenges of imaging the anterior medial temporal lobe with the attempt to resolve this region's convoluted functional neuroanatomy using 3-Tesla fMRI. Afterwards, Daniel continued his research at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, working with Christian Doeller and collaborating closely with Menno Witter. At Max Planck, Daniel gained expertise in 7-Tesla fMRI (through a collaboration with Nik Weiskopf and Robert Trampel) and deepened his knowledge of cross-species anatomy and function of the hippocampal region. Following Daniel's work that characterized the fine-grained functional neuroanatomy of the entorhinal, perirhinal, and parahippocampal cortex, he was awarded an ERC Starting Grant - ENTONET - focusing on functional properties of subregions of the medial temporal lobe, with an emphasis on the entorhinal cortex. After a visiting research fellowship at the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research in Austria, Daniel opened his lab diving into the nature of human hippocampal circuits and functions.
