White Matter Hyperintensities and Neurodegeneration in Dementia: Insights from a Latin American Cohort

Abstract: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are key markers of brain aging, yet their impact on neurodegeneration and cognition may vary across regions. In this talk, I present evidence from nearly 1,000 participants—including healthy controls, Alzheimer’s, and frontotemporal dementia patients—from Latin America and the US. Results show a stronger link between WMH burden and grey matter atrophy in Latin American cohorts, even among healthy individuals. Regional differences also emerged in how WMHs affect cognition, especially in bvFTD. These findings highlight the importance of context in understanding dementia vulnerability.

Abstract: Our collaborator, the magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) research group in Vienna has developed a neurochemical MRI imaging method with currently unique capabilities. Our aims with this project are to lay a foundation for future multi-centre neurochemical imaging studies, capable of delivering high-statistical power demanded of modern research. We will achieve this by transferring the Viennese methodology to Oxford and three other UK sites for a travelling head study to assess the reproducibility and robustness of the method on different MRI scanners.
