Neural mechanisms underlying altered learning and replay in psychosis

Abstract: Impairments in learning and memory precede positive symptoms in first episode psychosis. Recent human work using MEG has suggested that hippocampal replay which is crucial for learning and memory may be altered in individuals with first episode psychosis. The exact nature of and reason for the change in replay patterns remains unclear. In this project, we aim to investigate the mechanisms underlying altered learning and replay in a more targeted manner. We have designed an inference paradigm that allows us to quantify participants' ability to distinguish between statistical and causal relationships. Using combined 7T fMRI and fMRS, we will investigate the neural mechanisms underlying inference and credit assignment in a group of individuals with first episode psychosis as well as an age and sex-matched control group.  By using a combined fMRI fMRS sequence, we will be able to probe not just how replay is altered, but also how this relates to the well-documented decrease in neural inhibition in individuals with psychosis.

We designed a task to test the behavioural and neural mechanisms of how participants make such choices.
