We argue that the human association cortex is larger than would be expected for an equivalent ape brain, suggesting human association cortex is a unique adaptation. The internal organization of the human association cortex shows modifications of the ape plan in terms of expanded or novel areas and connections. These changes might support some of the unique human behaviors.
