Functional neuroimaging allows observation and assessment of brain function in vivo, and has played a key role in elucidating neural substrates of core processes involved in psychiatric disorders. This chapter reviews recent advances in our understanding of the neural underpinnings of mental health conditions and their treatment, as well as the potential for use of fMRI as a predictor for treatment outcome. Neuroimaging may also play a future role in improved diagnosis and identification of risk in psychiatry. We consider the step change that is required to make the transition of research to clinical practice, and the application of group effects to inform the treatment of individuals.
